Dear Gryffen: 1 week

Dear Gryffen,

Yesterday you were one week old. Already our time is going too fast! I have determined to enjoy every moment of you as a baby. Just thinking about you growing up so fast and not being my little bundle anymore makes me tear up! (Can I blame that on hormones? Maybe.)

You are becoming a very settled little boy, Gryffen; having a few good stretches of sleep at night. The only hard thing about night-time feeds is having to get out of my warm, oh-so-comfortable bed. But I do love our night-time cuddles so very much, with the lights dim and wrapped in a snuggly blanket together, so it's not really that hard.

In one week you have learned how to breastfeed like a champ, only losing 30g. You have the cutest, squishy-est cheeks, and when you're sleeping in my arms I love to squeeze them and move your chin up and down to make you look like you're talking. And then I giggle like an idiot because it looks so funny.

You really don't like getting changed - which happens frequently as you keep wetting through your nappies somehow! I just love to see you in only a nappy - you look SO TINY! It's lovely to have a little (to me) baby after expecting I'd have a big 10-pounder!

Your cord has just about dropped off and you have an enormous belly button underneath! We'll see if it pulls in as your tummy muscles grow stronger. I think it's pretty darn cute. You also have a strawberry birth mark on the first finger and thumb of your right hand. Maybe you'll grow up and hate it, but I actually really like it, for some reason. I think your tiny hands are so sweet and perfect, and your little red fingers are just lovely. You might have to spend the rest of your life spelling your name to people, but you'll also be able to make some great jokes about being caught red-handed!

By far, my favourite thing to do is to stare into your eyes. When you are awake you are very alert and love to just look at whoever is holding you - usually me, Papa or Rosie. In the hour after you were born you mesmerised me when you looked deep into my eyes as if you were memorising my features and matching them up to the me you knew from the inside. I've been smitten ever since.

Gryffen, you are such a treasure. A perfect gift that brings so much joy. Even at 3am.

Introducing Gryffen Gerry

Our newest son

Gryffen Gerry

Born at home
21 August, 2013

8lb 9oz / 3870g

He is absolutely beautiful. We have been enjoying our cuddles and gazing into each other's eyes.

Seeing the other children meet him made this Mama's heart melt into a big puddle of goo.

And I loved seeing my Mum, Gerri, have cuddles with her wee namesake. Now all four of our children carry the name of one of their beloved grandparents.

Wearing: Stripes, Asian + Belly

I realise it's not Wednesday today, but as I'd dearly love to have my Baby ASAP, maybe these photos will be out of date tomorrow! *wishful thinking*

Hayden said yesterday that this is the Biggest Belly he remembers on me, and looking at these photos, I can see what he means! 41 weeks + horizontal stripes = Big Baby Four!

I do so love my new-to-me thrifted, Asian-inspired jacket. I needed a warm layer that I could wear over Bump and decided a nice jacket was just the ticket, so off to the op-shops I went! I stumbled across this cute black one, with cool green details - one of those colours that always draws my eye. It is made of some type of wool - and that's all I can tell you because it is authentically Asian: I can't read the labels! I just love the collar and the ways the sleeves sit.

I realise that my pants probably don't suit me very well (particularly as I just noticed they seem to be falling down in this pic! Crotch down by knees, anyone?) - they are very wide-legged and certainly made for someone MUCH taller than me (as evidenced by how much I had to cut off the bottom to hem them for me!). BUT they are made from merino wool and are stretchy and warm and still look a bit nicer than track pants! Win win, me thinks.

A new haircut last week has been much appreciated. I like my hair longer sometimes, but I do think I prefer it shorter. I get more volume and I can wear cool earrings! While I lose out on not being able to chuck it in a quick pony-tail in the morning, it only takes me 5 minutes to wet it then blow dry it quickly and it looks 1000% better than a pony-tail!

These are my go-to shoes: plain, black (= goes with everything), slight wedge heel but very comfy to walk in. Just like flats, but better!

Jacket: Op Shop (originally from somewhere in Asia)
Top: K-Mart (bub2b range - so cheap and wearable!)
Merino Pants: Nes
Shoes: No. 1 Shoes

Baby Four Sweepstakes

Right people. The time for complaining is over. I am so ready to be finished incubating this baby, but it's not my choice. So Little One, whenever you decide you are ready to release your special little hormone to get this show on the road, you can know I will be ready!

Talking with my midwife yesterday, we realised that we had somehow calculated my period date wrong: it's not the 9th of August, but the 14th. I've decided to throw my 20 week scan date (3rd Aug) out the window. I don't particularly want to be induced - and possibly I'm hardly even 'overdue' anyway! - so as long as Baby and I are both healthy, we continue to wait. I am resigned to this, though I would certainly appreciate your prayers for patience! It feels like I'll be pregnant forever.

With that in mind, I thought I'd begin a Baby Four Sweepstakes! A block of chocolate and whatever other nice goodies I can rustle up will go to the person with the closest guess.

Leave me a comment with your pick for Baby Four's:
birth date
time of birth
birth weight

(Not gender because I already know that, so it would be a wasted guess!)
Edit** I've just added the other children's birth weights (under their pics) to help you along. :)

I'll write up a table and post it back up here this time tomorrow, so get your guesses in by 10am Saturday.
**Here is the table!** (Not very flash-looking.)

Post-Dates Snippets

I am now 41 weeks pregnant - which is where I expected to be, though of course a little bit earlier would also have been acceptable! Hence my 'Post-Dates' title. If I follow the 'pattern' of my last two babies (7 & 8 days past scan date), I should deliver this weekend! Hayden has set his relief for Monday and Tuesday, childcare is sorted for the other kids, pool is set up (unfilled!) and in the garage, basinette is made up and ready to go, tiny little baby clothes are laid out. All we need is a baby!

I am feeling fine. Tired, sore and uncomfortable, but content to wait for the right time. Though I will admit that it is getting harder to keep waiting! This is possibly the most frustrating time in pregnancy, KNOWING it will be soon - so soon - but not knowing just when and not being able to make any concrete plans. Mum described it well: it's like being an aeroplane in a holding pattern.

Listen up Baby Four! We want to meet you! And snuggle you and take in great bit gulps of that delicious newborn scent. And wrap you tight in cosy wraps and dress you in cute winter hats and squish your squishy cheeks. Hurry up and make your way to us please! Stimulate that pituitary gland for me, little baby, and get this show on the road!

Elsewhere in our household, the renovations continue. Father-In-Law is here again today and they are making good progress. The laundry is now gibbed out, with all fixings attached (skirtings etc), and ready to be plastered. Tristan's new room is also all gibbed out, they are working on getting the fixings up today and need to patch some holes in the floor. I'm not sure if that's all going to happen today, but once it does, that room will be ready for plastering too. Then painting and carpeting!

They are making good progress. It sure will be nice when it's all done and dusted though!

Living in a building site...

I think I won't blog again until it's with Baby news - my head-space is a little occupied just now. Hopefully I won't have time because Baby will appear tonight!
